RBG PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS TO PREPARE ACCOUNTING STUDENTS

To help upcoming accountants enter the workforce prepared and polished, The Avron B. Fogelman Professional Development Center and Reynolds Bone and Griesbeck, Memphis CPA firm, have partnered to develop a customized professional development program for U of M Accounting majors.  This new venture, ACT—Accounting Careers of Tomorrow, will be offered for the first time at the RBG headquarters starting in mid-September.

“Our firm wanted to join forces with the Fogelman College of Business and Economics to help upcoming accounting professionals enter the career world well-prepared for its challenges. We believe our future is in tomorrow’s students and this program provides our young professionals a great opportunity to share their experiences about how to successfully enter the accounting field,” said Leslie Bouldin, Chief Operating Officer with RBG.

Dean Rajiv Grover of the Fogelman College of Business and Economics said, “It’s extremely important for students to graduate from our College with a solid academic foundation, but professionalism is often the key that gives students a competitive advantage in today’s job market. We are pleased to partner with RBG to professionally prepare our students and we hope other firms will follow their lead to foster this initiative.”

ACT, an innovative approach to student development, is comprised of three-module training programs led by RBG professionals.

“Accounting majors who are selected to participate in this program will learn from industry professionals regarding career options in the accounting field, ethics, job preparation skills specific to the accounting industry and networking fundamentals,” said Kathy Tuberville, Director of the Avron B. Fogelman Professional Development Center.  “In addition, the ACT program will qualify as one of four training requirements needed for students to earn our Professional Development Certificate through our new Complete Professional Program, a point of distinction for students as they enter the career world.”

Top Ten Reasons to Review Your Estate Plan

Are You on Track with Your Estate Planning?
Estate planning is an ongoing process.  Everyday personal and family changes can make yesterday's well-devised estate plan wholly inadequate today.  Consequently, you should be aware of events that may signal the need for an estate plan review and possible revision. Our Estate Planning Guide is a great resource for familiarizing yourself with issues you should consider, and on Page 16 of the guide is a ten-point checklist to help you determine if your estate plan is up to date.

Although estate planning has become simpler for many people thanks to the new “permanent” estate-tax exemption amount and relatively low top estate-tax rate, that doesn't mean that estate tax is no longer a concern, particularly for higher income individuals with larger estates.¬†

When there are births, deaths, marriages, divorces, moves out of state, changes in estate composition, business changes or tax law changes, please call us or your professional financial advisor to discuss an estate plan review.

U.S. Basel III Capital Requirements for Community Banks

With the recent issuance and approval of the U.S. Basel III final rule, all financial institutions must assess how these new capital requirements will affect them going forward.   The final rule represents the most comprehensive overhaul of U.S. bank capital standards since the U.S. adoption of Basel I in 1989.  Even though most community banks will not be subject to the market risk and advanced approaches capital rules, they still have to determine whether to elect the option to exclude Accumulated Other Comprehensive Income in tier 1 capital and assess the impact of the changes in asset risk weightings, revisions in Prompt Corrective Action capital thresholds, and capital conservation buffers.  The OCC New Capital Rule Quick Reference Guide for Community Banks is provided here.

If you have any questions on how the final rule might affect your community bank, please contact John Griesbeck or Joseph Callicutt from our financial institution team at 901.682.2431.

Memphis Athletic Ministries Community Project

RBG's Young Professionals Group (YPG) organized our first Spring community involvement project. Following up on a successful project in Fall 2012, we returned to Memphis Athletic Ministries golf course to help with course maintenance. Each of the teams was led by a member of the YPG, and we helped with refurbishing the 7th hole, mowing, raking debris, laying sod, club house flower planting and hanging net at the driving range. It was great to get out of the office for a worthy cause like MAM and help prepare the course for MAM's summer youth program.
